Once corn reaches VT (tasseling), the plant's entire job changes, and everything the plant does from here forward from VT into R1 is about building and filling grain.Vegetative growth stops being the priority, and everything the plant does from here forward is about building and filling grain. Knowing where your corn sits in that process, R1 through R6, is the difference between guessing at foliar timing and actually hitting the window when a nutrient application can change your yield.
Why Reproductive Staging Matters for Nutrition Decisions
Corn can't fix a nutrient shortage at R5 the way it might recover from one at V6. Once a kernel's potential size is set, no amount of foliar feeding gets it back. That's why timing foliar nutrition to the right reproductive stage matters more than almost any other input decision you'll make after planting.
R1 Silking
The R1 corn stage, also known as silking, is when silks emerge and pollination begins. This is the single most yield-critical week of the entire season, every silk that isn't pollinated is a kernel that never forms. Heat and moisture stress here cost more yield than at any other stage. It's also the ideal window to begin a foliar program aimed at supporting kernel sets, since nutrient demand for zinc, boron, and sulfur climbs sharply right as pollination starts.
R2: Blister
In the R2 corn stage, about 10-14 days after silking, kernels resemble small blisters filled with clear fluid. The kernel number for the season is now essentially locked in, the plant's focus shifts from "how many kernels" to "how big will they get."
R3: Milk
During the R3 corn stage, the fluid inside the kernel turns milky white as starch begins accumulating. This is early grain fill, and it's a strong window for foliar nutrition aimed at supporting the plant's photosynthetic capacity through the rest of fill, this is where a product like Test Weight Builder is designed to be applied.
R4: Dough
In the R4 corn stage, kernel contents thicken to a paste-like consistency. The plant is now moving sugars and nutrients into the kernel as fast as its leaves can produce them, leaf health during R4 has an outsized impact on final kernel weight.
R5: Dent
Kernels dent at the crown as starch fills in from the top down, and a visible "milk line" appears, marking the boundary between mature and immature starch. This is the last major grain fill period. A late foliar application here is one of the few remaining levers for adding test weight before the plant shuts down.
R6: Physiological Maturity
At the R6 corn stage physiological maturity a black abscission layer forms where the kernel attaches to the cob, cutting off further nutrient movement. Kernel dry weight is now maximized, whatever test weight and yield the plant achieved is locked in. Everything after R6 is about field drying, not filling.
How to Time Foliar Nutrition Using These Stages
As a practical rule: think of R1 as the start of the demand curve, and R3-R5 as the highest-leverage window for foliar nutrition, since that's when the plant is actively translocating nutrients into filling kernels. Applications made after R6 have no biological path to affect yield, the plant simply isn't building kernel weight anymore.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the single best stage to apply a foliar product for yield? Most research points to R1-R3 for kernel-set support and R3-R5 for grain-fill and test weight; the exact best window depends on your specific yield-limiting factor that season.
Does corn have an R7 stage like soybeans do? No, corn's reproductive staging ends at R6 (physiological maturity). Soybeans are the crop with stages extending to R7 and R8, which sometimes causes confusion when growers compare the two crops.
